In partnership with talkSTEM, AT&T Performing Arts Center invites you to join us for the third annual Pi Day Math Festival featuring walkSTEM.

The festival will showcase the many ways in which math impacts our world – in art, nature, science and more. Enjoy fun math-related activities from a variety of exhibitors.

STEM in the Dallas Arts District: A Special Pi Day Panel Discussion
Moderated by Sam Baker, KERA’s Senior Editor and Morning Edition Host
10:30 – 11:15 a.m.

STEM is everywhere! Learn how science, technology, engineering and math play a part in bringing the arts to life in the Dallas Arts District during this family-friendly conversation. Representatives from the Perot Museum of Nature & Science, the Dallas Museum of Art, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, the Nasher Sculpture Center and the Dallas Opera will discuss how they use STEM in their careers every day. 

The Pi Day Math Festival is open to families, teachers and interested grown-ups. No unaccompanied minors permitted.

SEM Super Debaters

Roland Parrish Scholarship Debate

Juan Diaz and Sophie Rahman won the first inaugural Roland Parrish Scholarship Debate on January 29, 2019 at James Madison High School. They successfully convinced three judges that America’s electoral college system ought to be abandoned in favor of a popular vote. Both debaters will win $5,000 in scholarship prizes from Mr. Parrish, in partnership with DISD. Congratulations to our colleagues from Irma Rangel, who won second place. To qualify, Juan and Sophie were the first place team at the Dallas Fall City Championship.

Three SEM Robotics Teams Have Advanced to the FTC North Texas Regional Championship

Last Saturday our two all-freshmen rookie FTC Robotics teams took it up a notch at their last qualifier tournament of the season. Iron Core was 5th place of 30 in robot performance and made it into the playoff rounds, but were then eliminated by the highest scoring team in our region. Iron Star also made it into the playoffs and then advanced upon receiving 2nd place Inspire Award along with the Control Award.

Dallas Isd Stem Expo

This coming Saturday, February 2nd, is the Dallas ISD STEM Expo. Our teams will be there representing SEM and teaching younger students how to program simple sumo robots and how to use 3D printers. Come see us at the Dallas City of Learning exhibit where our teams will also be demonstrating their advancing robots and staffing the Mobile STEM lab that Iron Reign built. Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Contest

Samsung Solve For Tomorrow Contest

Juniors, (left to right) Oziel De La Fuente, Meagin Montes, Laura Thompson, and Jonathan Snow are participating in the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Contest. The Contest focuses on how STEM can be applied to help improve your community. They were selected as a State Winner in the 2018-2019 Samsung Solve for Tomorrow contest and won the school $20,000 in technology and classroom supplies. These students are now competing to become National Finalists in the next phase of the competition by working on a Silent Alarm System for school shootings.
