The Robobusters, Team 5057, has competed in the FIRST Robotics Competition since 2014. They have over 50 members and are sponsored by Dr. Strong in TAG .Though the majority of members are from SEM, Team 5057 has students from all six schools in Townview Magnet Center. The team is split into four divisions: Build, Programming, CAD, Business.
This past Wednesday, the Robobusters were invited to present their team and its accomplishments to Ambit Energy. Ambit has graciously given a grant of $3000 to help further Team 5057’s goal of improving both the Oak Cliff and Townview community through robotics. Ambit provided several mentors so members can learn STEM from a professional standpoint and improve both their own and the team’s abilities. The Robobusters thank Ambit for this opportunity and are excited about what is to come.
Note: If you are interested in joining, come to room 306 after school on Wednesday or text @robobuster to 81010 to join the remind.
SEM will be administering the American Mathematics Competition (AMC) on February 7th, 2019. The AMC 10 and AMC 12 are both 25-question, 75-minute, multiple choice examinations in high school mathematics designed to promote the development and enhancement of problem-solving skills. If you are interested in participating in this competition, please sign up at tinyurl.com/SEMAMC. The deadline to sign up is November 30th.
The AMC is the first in a series of competitions that are used to select students for the US team of the International Mathematics Olympiad. Students who do well on the AMC will be invited to participate in the American Invitational Mathematics Exam (AIME). Some highly selective schools such as MIT have a space on their application for AMC and AIME. These exams give you exposure to advanced math questions and can provide a great place to start learning more math. All SEM students that are interested are encouraged to sign up. Contact Mr. Newton with questions.
Just by signing up or linking your cards to SEM, our school will earn 1% cash back on Kroger and Tom Thumb purchases, and 0.5% on AmazonSmile purchases. Just think, SEM will benefit from your daily, weekly, and routine purchases!
Please also tell your friends, neighbors, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and other family to sign up as well with SEM’s codes. This is easy and painless fundraising for our school! And it only takes a few minutes of your time to sign up. Let’s get 100% participation from all family members!
Don’t delay – the holiday season is upon us with Thanksgiving and Holiday season shopping! Let’s get donations for SEM simply by the shopping we will already be doing!
Kroger Community Rewards #NY287
Tom Thumb #13990
What is AmazonSmile and why should I link my Amazon?
AmazonSmile is an easy way to raise money for SEM while you are already making purchases! The AmazonSmile Foundation will donate 0.5% of the purchase price from eligible smile.amazon purchases. Millions of products qualify for donations! You will see eligible products marked “Eligible for AmazonSmile donation” on their smile.amazon.com product detail pages. Please note that recurring or subscription renewals are excluded from donations.
Remember, only purchases made through smile.amazon.com (NOT www.amazon.com nor the mobile app) generate AmazonSmile Donations. Make sure you see the “Supporting: PTA Texas Congress 2570 Science & Engineering PTSA” below the search bar!
Visit http://www.kroger.com. After creating a login for your Kroger account, sign in and click on “Savings & Rewards” in the main menu bar and select “Kroger Community Rewards” from the drop down menu. Select “I’m a Customer” and enter NY287 in the “Find an Organization” search box. (Please note if searching by school name Science and Engineering Magnet will pull up 2 codes; make sure to use NY287; we are in the process of requesting the duplicate number removed.)
Brand new Kroger card users will need to create an account which requires bank information, email address, and a Rewards card which you can pick up at your local Kroger store!
And finally, remember to swipe your card at checkout for store savings and to apply for SEM donations!
Help raise money for SEM by linking your Randalls/Tom Thumb card! Simply print and fill out the Good Neighbor Program Form and list SEM #13990 as one of your charities! You can also add 2 other participating charities for your Tom Thumb donations! Take the form to your Tom Thumb store’s Courtesy Booth the next time you shop.
To get the form from the website, go to www.randalls.com and go to the bottom of the webpage. Under Company Info, click Community Caring and then click on the Good Neighbor Program logo. Follow instructions listed.
