My name is Amy Brenner, MSW, LCSW, and I am the director of the Inspiring Careers in Mental Health high school internship at the UT Southwestern Psychiatry Department. I am writing to invite students who will be rising 10th, 11th, and 12th graders this summer to consider applying. We are looking for students whose interests run towards the fields of mental health and medical provision.
This has been an exciting program in previous years, and we are hoping to grow it this year! Students are given the ability to meet in small groups with psychiatrists, psychologists, and social workers, as well as nursing staff, to get in-depth information about the the provision of mental health services. Students also get the unusual opportunity to round with doctors and sit in on case conferences on various services at Parkland Hospital and see first-hand what the field has to offer.
The program meets for 2 weeks from June 1-12 (M-F). It is a competitive internship, as we keep the group small in order to have ideal access to providers. The application deadline is Monday, March 16, 2020. I have attached the flyer describing the program and the application with further details. I hope you will consider passing this information along to students who would be interested. It is a wonderful opportunity to learn about a major medical center, to make connections in the mental health field, and to become inspired to work towards a rewarding career in mental health.
The Program YES! Youth Empowered for Success will provide young Texans with meaningful insight into the workings of policymaking and the art of civic engagement. Students will leave with new skills to be applied in their own communities — on campus, online, and in the field when serving others.
Who Can Apply? The initial application period for rising seniors (Class of 2020) has ended; however, new spots are now open for rising juniors (Class of 2021).

Summer Research Program for Students
The purpose of this program is to provide students the opportunity to work one-on-one with faculty researchers on an investigative project in a laboratory setting. This program provides meaningful experiences in biomedical research to encourage students to consider careers in the sciences. The program is a full time commitment that runs for eight weeks from Monday, June 3 through Friday, July 26, 2019. Applicants must be at least 16 years old by June 1, 2019, be currently classified as a current junior, and be enrolled in high school. A stipend of $2800 will be paid to each student. As part of the requirements of the program, each student will give a poster presentation of their experimental results and will present highlights of their experience to classmates at their home campus during their senior year.
We hope that you will consider submitting an on-line application to this highly beneficial program and we ask that you also encourage your fellow science teachers, as well as juniors to apply to this worthwhile program. Please fill out the application on-line using the links below. Completed applications and all documents must be postmarked by 11:59 pm on Friday, February 1, 2019 to be considered.
